About the Organisation

The Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra (SSK) has been conceived as a grand exposition of the life and culture of the people of Assam, of its diverse ethnic groups and sub-groups, the people who have created the cultural mosaic which is the essence of the state, in respect of all its beauty and splendour. Named after the great unifier of Assam and one of the greatest integrator of the Indian society of the Fifteenth century, Srimanta Sankaradeva, the Kalakshetra Society attempts to capture and convey the essence of the great seers spirit, who preached the message of unity in diversity and the universal brotherhood of man. The institution attempts for the preservation, restoration, research, promotion and development of the rich cultural heritage of the diverse ethnic communities inhabiting the state.

The Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra (SSK) is being run by a Registered Society named as Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra Society (SSKS) consisting of (a) a General Council (b) an Executive Council and (c) an Academic Council.

The construction of the Complex (Phase I) has been fully funded by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India, the total construction cost being 20.15 Crores. The fund for the maintenance of the project is expected to flow in from the State and Central govt. grants, public donations and rental from the different components of the Complex offered for used by various organizations and institutions from time to time.

Latter the Srimanta Sankaradeva International Convention Centre has been constructed as Phase II of SSK. The International Convention Centre was proposed with three Auditoria and two auditoria with sitting capacity of 300 and 1250 has already been completed with fund received from Central and State Governments.

All these components strive to make the complex a living nerve centre of cultural excellence of Assam and the region.

Functions & Objectives

The main objectives of the SSK are-

  1. To protect, promote and preserve the cultural heritage of the people of Assam.
  2. To set up institutes of dance, drama, music, fine-arts and crafts, etc., for the purpose mentioned above.
  3. To promote research in the field of music, dance, drama and fine-arts etc. and publish literatures on them.
  4. To encourage exchange of ideas and techniques of performing arts, fine-arts and crafts between different ethnic groups of the state;
  5. To promote cultural exchange in the field of performing art, fine-arts and crafts with other states.
  6. To establish a library and a museum.
